Exodus 38 : Altars, courtyards, and Materials

March 7, 2024 ·

Summary:
The craftsmen constructed the altar of burnt offering and the courtyard exactly as God had described.

They also crafted a bronze basin from mirrors donated by women.

The total amount of gold used was approximately one metric ton. The silver amounted to about 3 and 3/4 tons, derived from a half-shekel contribution from each male over the age of 20, totaling 603,550 individuals. The bronze used weighed approximately 2 and 1/2 tons.

Key verse:
22. Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses;

My thoughts:
This chapter contains a significant amount of original content, particularly regarding the quantities of materials utilized.

In this era, mirrors were not made of glass but polished bronze, which logically explains their use in creating a bronze basin.

The precise amount of silver utilized was 100 talents and 1,775 sanctuary shekels, equating to 301,775 shekels. This figure exactly matches half of 603,550—the number of men contributing half a shekel each. While the total number of 603,550 adult men, suggesting a massive population originating from just 70 individuals who entered Egypt 400 years prior, might appear improbable, the meticulous mathematics employed in the census suggest its possibility, albeit unlikely. This precise accounting further manifests in subsequent narratives.
