Exodus 36 : Construction starts

March 5, 2024 ·

Summary:
Bezalel, Oholiab, and other craftsmen began constructing the sanctuary using the offerings provided by the people. Eventually, they accumulated more materials than necessary, prompting them to request that the people cease their contributions.

They constructed the Tabernacle (the tent) exactly as God had instructed them in a previous chapter.

Key verse:
5. and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the LORD has commanded us to do.”

My thoughts:
From a contemporary perspective, the repetition found in the Bible may seem unnecessary, as we are accustomed to written texts where one can easily revisit earlier sections. However, it’s important to recognize that for much of history, the Bible was transmitted orally. Large portions of the Old Testament likely existed as oral traditions before being documented in written form. In this context, repetition served a critical role in ensuring accuracy.

Today, the practice of oral recitation is not as common, leading some to mistakenly view the Bible’s formation as akin to a game of “Chinese whispers,” where information becomes distorted over time. However, the oral transmission of texts like the Bible was highly valued and remarkably precise, reflecting a fundamentally different approach to preserving information.
