Exodus 20 : The Ten Commandments

February 7, 2024 ·

Summary:
Moses received the Ten Commandments from God, which are:

  1. Worship no other gods.
  2. Do not create idols.
  3. Do not misuse God’s name.
  4. Keep the Sabbath holy.
  5. Honor your parents.
  6. Do not murder.
  7. Do not commit adultery.
  8. Do not steal.
  9. Do not bear false witness.
  10. Do not covet.

The people were afraid of God’s presence in the cloud and begged Moses to have God not speak to them directly because of their fear.

God reiterated the commandment against making any other gods and also instructed Moses to construct an altar of undressed stones.

Key verse:
3. You shall have no other gods before me.

My thoughts:
These commandments serve as the foundation of morality that God provided to His people, and they remain well-known today. They are reiterated in Deuteronomy 5. Much of modern law has its origins in these commandments. It is significant that God outlined a general approach to morality before delving into specifics in subsequent chapters and books. This suggests that, while God values holiness in details, He prioritizes overall morality, kindness, and right thinking.

The first four commandments focus on our relationship with God, and the last six on our relationships with others. This mirrors Jesus’ summary of the law, which further emphasizes loving God and loving others.
