Genesis 33 : Jacob meets Esau

July 3, 2023 ·

Esau’s 400 men come and meet Jacob, who is humbling himself greatly. Esau asks, “Why did you send all these gifts?” Jacob explains that he sent them to gain Esau’s favor, but Esau assures him that it was unnecessary, as Jacob already had his favor. Despite Jacob’s persistence, Esau eventually accepts the gifts. Esau then heads back to Seir, while Jacob takes a slower pace to prevent his animals from dying. He settles in Succoth and later resides just outside the city of Shechem in Canaan, where he builds an altar.

Key verse:
10. Jacob said, “No, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me.

My thoughts:
Despite his wealth and status, Jacob considers himself lower than Esau, his brother whom he tricked twice. Jacob humbles himself greatly, probably because his brother has attained even more wealth and power than himself. Here, Esau seems a bit embarrassed by his brother’s humility and tries to reject his gifts. Luke 14:7-11 shows that if you are humbled, then you will be lifted up, but if you are proud, you will be brought low. Jacob exemplifies this principle by being humble.

Jacob describes seeing Esau’s face as “seeing the face of God.” Jacob would know this (see Genesis 32).
