Genesis 29: Jacob gets a couple of wives

June 29, 2023 ·

Summary:
Jacob arrives in Paddan Aram and discovers a well. He engages in conversation with some men, and then Rachel, Laban’s daughter, appears. Jacob falls deeply in love with her. He stays in Laban’s house for a period of time and eventually begins working for him. The agreement is that Jacob would marry Rachel after working for Laban for seven years. However, Laban deceives Jacob by giving him Leah, the older sister who is considered less attractive. Consequently, Jacob is required to work an additional seven years in order to marry Rachel, whom he loves more.

During this time, Leah gives birth to four sons, while Rachel remains unable to conceive. Leah hopes that by having four sons, Jacob will grow to love her more.

Key verses:

30.  So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and he lovedRachel more than Leah, and served Laban for another seven years.

31. When the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

My thoughts:
In modern Western society, there is often an expectation of immediate gratification. This mindset extends to relationships as well, where people may become anxious if they don’t quickly find a boyfriend or girlfriend, fearing they may never get married. In contrast, we can look at Jacob’s story. He had to patiently wait for seven years to marry his desired wife, only to be deceived and forced to wait another seven years. This serves as a reminder that sometimes we place too much emphasis on wanting things to happen quickly, and instead we should learn to accept and trust in God’s timing.

God, recognizing that Leah was not loved by Jacob, showed compassion towards her. As a way of bringing justice, God allowed Leah to bear children while causing Rachel to be barren.
