Genesis 27: Jacob steals Esau’s blessing

June 27, 2023 ·

Summary:
Isaac, who is now old and blind, tells his firstborn, Esau, to go and fetch some food for him so that he can bestow Esau with his blessing. However, Rebekah, Isaac’s wife, who favored Jacob, overhears their conversation and advises Jacob to impersonate Esau in order to receive the blessing. Jacob successfully deceives Isaac and receives the blessing that was originally intended for Esau. Upon Esau’s return, he is furious about losing the blessing and can only receive a lesser blessing.

Consumed by anger and driven by the desire to kill Jacob, Esau’s wrath compels Rebekah to direct Jacob to flee to Laban until Esau’s anger subsides.

Key verse:

29. Let peoples serve you,
and nations bow down to you.
Be lord over your brothers,
and may your mother’s sons bow down to you.
Cursed be everyone who curses you,
and blessed be everyone who blesses you!

My thoughts:
Now Jacob has received both the birthright of the firstborn and the chief blessing, both times through deception. Jacob certainly falls into the category of ‘God using imperfect people.’ The prophecy of Genesis 25:23 is fulfilled in Isaac’s blessing to Jacob.

This marks the beginning of a continued narrative on Jacob, which is much more extensive than the narrative on Isaac.
