Genesis 20: Abraham Deceives Again

June 20, 2023 ·

Abraham moves around and eventually settles in the kingdom of Abimelech in Gerar. Fearing that the people might kill him to take his wife, Abraham once again claims that Sarah is his sister (which is technically true but still deceptive). Abimelech, unaware of Sarah’s marital status, takes her into his household. However, God intervenes and warns Abimelech that he has taken a married woman. Abimelech promptly returns Sarah to Abraham, expressing frustration that Abraham did not disclose the truth about their relationship. As a gesture of reconciliation, Abimelech bestows gifts upon Abraham and Sarah. In response, Abraham prays for Abimelech, and God heals Abimelech’s family from the curse that affected them during the time Sarah was in Abimelech’s possession.

Key Verse:

  1. Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

My thoughts:

Abraham’s journey showcases a mixture of extreme faith and moments of doubt. In this instance, he lacks trust in God’s protection and resorts to deception as a means of ensuring his safety. However, this approach proves futile, and Abraham’s deception only leads to complications for everyone involved.

It is worth noting that Abraham is referred to as a prophet in this passage, marking the first instance in the Bible where someone is identified with this title.
