Genesis 18: Three Guys on the Way to Sodom

June 18, 2023 ·

Summary:
Three individuals, including two angels and the Lord in some form of human appearance, visit Abraham on their way to Sodom. Abraham warmly welcomes them, and God reveals to Abraham that Sarah will give birth to a child within the coming year. Sarah finds this announcement amusing, and God questions her laughter. God informs Abraham that He is headed to Sodom to investigate the reports of their sinful behavior and intends to destroy the city. However, Abraham persuades God not to destroy Sodom if even just ten righteous individuals are found there.

Key Verses:

  1. Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”
  1. Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.”

My thoughts:
Despite God’s infallibility and our human propensity for flawed judgment, God, for some reason, allows us to influence Him, as evidenced by His interaction with Abraham in this instance. I believe this is part of God’s intentional plan because He desires our involvement in His divine purposes, even though our judgment may be imperfect at times. God grants us the ability to appeal for grace and is willing to alter His course of action in response to our pleas.

While God initially planned to destroy Sodom due to its collective sin, Abraham’s intercession led God to also consider the presence of individually righteous individuals within the city. God demonstrates concern for both communal righteousness and individual righteousness. It is worth noting that many modern Protestant churches often focus primarily on individual righteousness, but God’s attention encompasses both aspects.
