Genesis 4: From Jealousy to Murder

June 4, 2023 ·

Summary: Cain and Abel were born to Adam and Eve, with Cain being the firstborn. Abel offers a better sacrifice to God than Cain, which makes Cain jealous. In his jealousy, Cain kills Abel. God discovers the crime and curses Cain, condemning him to be a restless wanderer. However, God also promises that no one will harm him. Cain then settles in Nod, east of Eden. Lamech, a descendant of Cain, becomes the seventh generation from Adam. He becomes the first person to take more than one wife, going against God’s design. Lamech has three sons from his two wives. Additionally, Adam has another son named Seth, who is born to replace Abel.

Key Verse: 7. If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.

My thoughts:
Sin continues to enter the world through acts of murder and pride. In verses 6 and 7, God emphasizes His desire for righteousness. However, even at this early stage, we witness God’s mercy in action. Despite Cain’s sinful actions, God still loves him and shows compassion when Cain expresses his fear of being killed as a wanderer. God ensures his protection, preventing anyone from harming him.

Lamech emerges as an intriguing character, characterized by his pride and rebellion against God. He defies God’s design by taking two wives and arrogantly compares himself to Cain, boasting, “If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.” This serves as an indication of sin’s growing influence on the world. God’s perfect creation is clearly no longer perfect, as sin begins to spread and infect humanity more and more.
